Arezou Moeini is an Iranian-Canadian multi-disciplinary conceptual artist born in Tehran, Iran. She received her BFA in painting from Soore University, Tehran, in 1998. After her relocation to Canada, she continued her studies at Emily Carr University with a focus on 3D media and mold design. To date, Moeini’s works have been exhibited in various venues in Vancouver, BC; Tehran, Iran; and Crotone, Italy. In addition, she has edited and published a book of Jamal Bakhshpour’s artworks, a renowned contemporary Iranian artist, titled Jamal Bakhshpour: Selected Works (1964 - 2001).
Moeini is interested in exploring how sensory experiences influence our sense of self and our relationship with the world. Her works seek to disrupt visitors’ habitual behaviour and probe the boundaries of perception. Moeini’s practice is in part informed by her studies on the metaphoric significance of light, form, movement, and space in philosophy, art, and architecture. Her installations are representative of her pared-down aesthetic which draws on the interplay between these essential elements, creating interactive experiences that invite introspection and quiet wonder.
In Moeini’s practice, the relationship between concept and material is fluid and reciprocal. At times, the concept guides the choice of material while, in other projects, an encounter with a material inspires the concept. This dynamic relationship between material and idea allows the work to evolve and develop multiple layers of meaning.
